Robin Slow - A Kanoihi Whakarite

The series of works that follows become ‘nga kanohi whakarite’, visual metaphors for many different manu, past and present that we share the whenua with. They inhabited this land before nga tangata (people) and came forth with their own iwi, hapu and whanau. Their lives and ways have become our ways and being and we see ourselves reflected in and through them. We reflect this back in the korero, waiata, whakatauaki, whakarite, (speaking, song, dance, sayings, metaphors, figures of speech) that are part of our lived and present lives.

Wherever we go they were before us
Wherever we go we have damaged their place
If the wellness of birds is the wellness of the planet
What dare we make of their silence?

(Adrienne Meria)

From the hair of Rehua
Ka ngaro reoreo tangata kikī e manu.
No human voice was heard, just the twittering of birds.
From Rehu’s hair, Tane was gifted the songbirds and their food of plants and seeds and set about covering his mother’s (Papatuanuku) body (whenua) with them. It became the ‘cloak of the land’.

Hine Raukatauri
Kōkako wanted to sing like Hine Raukatauri and so as a reward for his help in obtaining water, Maui told Kōkako to eat the casemoth, the home of Raukatauri. This they did to the present day
Hine Raukatauri sits in her house and calls softly and gently for her lover and from this we have the amplified pattern for the pūtorino, the unique Māori flute.

Kōkako
Kōkako filled his wattles with water to give to Maui after his battle with the sun and as a reward Maui stretched his legs to allow him to move about in the water without getting too wet. This is why the kokako prefers to leap and hop rather than fly.
